When you are relying on drugs or alcohol to self medicate or even just to have fun, it can be easy to miss the fact that you are actually abusing them. While alcohol is generally considered to be acceptable in reasonable amounts, abuse can sneak up on you before you know it. Even social drinkers may have a tendency to overindulge, which can lead to binge drinking. This is very common, especially among college students and can lead to big problems down the road.

First, you will need to admit that you do indeed have a drug and alcohol abuse problem. Once you have gotten past this step you will be able to start seeking help. It is a good idea to find a drug and alcohol abuse treatment center that is well versed in handling not only the physical aspects of drug addiction but also the mental aspects. This is a proven approach that helps users get to the bottom of their reliance on drugs or alcohol and figure out how to stop that cycle.

There are many different types of drug and alcohol abuse programs that are currently available. If your problem is not too severe, you may be able to find an outpatient program that will allow you to keep working as you get back on the right path. However, if you are having difficulty with willpower or the temptation to abuse either drugs or alcohol is too strong, you would be best served at an inpatient facility where you can focus on treating the problem aggressively. When in doubt, taking a few weeks in rehab is generally preferable to spending your life enslaved to a substance. It may not always be convenient, but you need to weigh how important your life is and realize that this will time well spent.
